time to tie myself to the mast

  • personal

a guy called ulysses was more intelligent than he was strong willed. he set sail on a ship along with his crew and had to pass sirens -- beautiful women who sing enchanting songs. but listening to them makes one irrational and forget everything and just sit there, listening, until they wasted away (hmmm…sounds familiar).

the obvious fix? earplugs. but ulysses wanted to hear them for himself fully knowing that it would be stupid. he asked his crew to tie him to the ship's mast and ignore anything he says or does during the period they're near the sirens. hence, he could hear them singing (wow), and still stay sane.

i think it's time to test this theory.

cut to: me, august 2025. quit my job with a few weeks of savings and no backup. think sirens, but in my case it's curiosity, burnout (not really), and fomo. after two decades of school → undergrad → work with almost no breaks, i wanted to know what it would be like to stop rowing for once.

do i have a plan? not really. exit strategy? nope. i just wanna hear the damn sirens.

tldr: am i ulysses? lol no. but i am crazy enough to try the same trick...
